The Solar Eclipse is Coming! April 8th, 2024

Are you ready?

There’s been so much buzz about the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8th, 2024. Did you know that the next solar eclipse is not expected in the US until 2044? Here’s what you need to know about the solar eclipse:

What is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse describes the event when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, blocking out the sun’s light partially or totally, casting a shadow on the Earth. When this takes place, it will appear as if it is dusk outside while the moon is obscuring the view of the sun, while it passes by.

What’s so special about it?

The last solar eclipse that we witnessed in 2017, didn’t last as long, since the moon was a further distance away from the Earth than it is now. On April 8th, the moon will be closer to the Earth than it was before, causing a wider band, or path of totality, giving us a longer time of ‘darkness’ as it passes between the Earth and the sun. What’s really cool, is that Pennsylvania is one of the states who happens to be in the path of totality, and will get to witness the moon completely blocking the sun! And that's not all! NASA's website has included some awesome pictures and details so you can look out for shadow bands, Bailey's Beads, and a diamond ring while viewing the eclipse!

How can I view it safely?

What is most important, is to make sure that you’re prepared with certified ISO 12312-2 compliant viewing glasses. Find out how to check your glasses for authenticity here. Certified glasses or a handheld solar viewer should be used before and after totality, and at all times during a partial eclipse. If using a telescope, binoculars or a camera, make sure that it has a special solar filter on it, acting in a similar way to the certified viewing glasses. Please be safe when viewing the solar eclipse on April 8th, and use extra caution for young children who may not understand the risks of removing glasses while observing this event, which will lead to serious eye injury, from the the concentrated solar rays.

When will there be another eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse is not expected to be seen in our part of the world again until the year 2044! So make this day something special for your family! Throw an eclipse party, create some cool crafts together and take some pictures (when it’s safe to do so!) to capture this event with your family and friends!
