That Time I Almost Ruined Thanksgiving!

Avoid making the same mistake I did...

November 19, 2023

I’ll never forget the first time I offered to make the Thanksgiving turkey. I wanted to take the burden off of my grandmother, so all she had to do was make our family favorite recipe, mac n’ cheese, and host the dinner. At the time, she only lived down the street from me, so I was feeling pretty confident it wouldn’t be a problem. I had done my research and read hundreds of reviews to find the best cooking method and seasoning combination to get the best result. That year, not only did the turkey turn out perfect, but together with the help of my boyfriend (now husband), we transported Tom safely down the road to be served for a wonderful  Thanksgiving dinner.

So when the time came the next year, I naturally offered to make the turkey again. I remember it had taken us longer to earn enough points to get our free turkey. So by the time I earned one, the only ones that were big enough at the the grocery store were frozen turkeys. It wasn’t until Thanksgiving Eve, that I realized how big of a mistake I made when I unwrapped the turkey to find it was still FROZEN! Surely three days in the fridge was more than enough time for the turkey to thaw, right? WRONG!

In a panic, I searched online for what to do, knowing I couldn’t be the first person this happened to. Thankfully, I was able to come up with a plan to soak the turkey in a water bath. I stayed up late into the night changing out the water to make sure the turkey was thawed out in time to go in the oven, early the next morning. In the end, it all worked out, and the Thanksgiving crisis was averted, but it is a memory I will never forget! So let me spare you some stress this year, by reminding you that you need 1 day of thawing time for every 5 pounds of turkey. So if you have a 20lb frozen turkey, get it to the fridge right away!

Can’t remember how long the turkey needs to roast? I’ve also included the cooking times below according to the size of your turkey.

Have a funny Thanksgiving memory?

Share it around the table this year and enjoy the laughs with your loved ones, while reflecting on the other blessings you have to be thankful for.
